Putting yourself First: A Culture of Self-Care

Many of us live fast-paced, busy lives. If we don’t take time to slow down and care for ourselves, it’s very difficult to do our jobs in the education sector—or anything else—well. Look at it like an oxygen mask on an airplane—the flight attendant instructs you to put your mask on first, before assisting others. What are some ways you and your colleagues foster a culture of self-care?

Promoting a culture of self-care means you’re also contributing to a healthy workplace, whether that’s in a school, office or other environment! By modeling healthy behaviours and incorporating wellness throughout your work day, you can play a large role in comprehensive school health.

I suggest using resources such as the 10-Minute Wellness Activity Series: The “Me” in Team to practice self-care with your colleagues. You can also try out Ever Active Schools’ list of staff wellness ideas.

By focusing on and prioritizing staff wellness in this way, you’re making a positive impact on your workplace culture.
